On Monday, I attended the Nolan Taylor and Uncle Lucius concert in Memphis, Tennessee at Growlers. I bought these tickets months ago as soon as the concert was announced and have been looking forward to the concert since. In all honesty, I bought the tickets so I could see Nolan Taylor again. While I do enjoy Uncle Lucius’ music, at the time when I bought the tickets, I knew more of Nolan’s songs and was more interested in seeing him perform again.
Though, I was quite surprised that this concert didn’t get canceled. On Sunday afternoon, severe storms with high winds left most of Memphis and surrounding areas without power. (At the time of this writing, I still didn't have power at my house). Plus, the part of town where the venue, Growlers, is located typically loses power during such storms. But luckily, Growlers had power and the show could go on.
The night of the concert, I arrived about 30 minutes early to ensure I could be at the front but was quite surprised when a line didn’t start to form until 10 minutes before doors. Doors opened at 7 pm, Nolan Taylor’s set began at 8 and lasted roughly 35 minutes, and Uncle Lucius’ set began at 9 and lasted roughly an hour and a half.
Nolan Taylor put on a great show, as I expected he would. I saw Nolan for the first time last summer in Nashville when he opened for Logan Halstead and have been hooked on his music ever since. Nolan is a great singer-songwriter who always performs from the heart. I could tell just from looking around the venue Monday night that his music had touched both my soul and the souls of those around me.
Not only is Nolan a great musician, but he’s also a great person. I had the chance to chat with him after his set Monday night and he remembered me from the concert in Nashville last summer. He is one of the most humble people I’ve met and he truly appreciates his fans — I noticed Nolan talking to and taking pictures with fans throughout the night.
Even though I wasn’t as familiar with Uncle Lucius’ music as I was with Nolan Taylor’s, I still really enjoyed their set. In addition to their music being great, the band has a captivating stage presence. They are super entertaining to watch, especially their keyboard player. You can tell that they are having a great time up on that stage.
‘Keep The Wolves Away’ is one of my favorite songs and being able to hear it live was a breathtaking experience. I was also able to get a setlist!
In addition to their great performance, Uncle Lucius also had a great merch selection! Their merch offerings included shirts, tank tops, jackets, hats, can koozies, and CDs. I got a can koozie — another one to add to my collection.
I had a great time Monday night and think Growlers was the perfect venue for this concert. It wasn’t too small nor too big, it fit the crowd just right. This was my second time at Growlers and I’m planning on attending more shows there in the future.
