I Listen To More Than Just Country Music

While this blog focuses mainly on country music, country music is not the only genre of music that I listen to. In reality, my music taste is pretty diverse. In this week's post, I'd like to share with you a few of my favorite artists outside the country music genre.

Bon Iver

If you read my article about Zach Bryan's new EP, you may already know that Bon Iver has been one of my favorite artists for over a decade now. I was first introduced to his music when I was about 10 years old. When I was a kid, I was a competitive dancer, and Bon Iver's music was often played during our dance lessons.

Even though I didn't fully understand the meaning behind all his lyrics back then since I was so young, I still deeply enjoyed his music. Bon Iver's self-titled album and 'For Emma, Forever Ago' were actually two of the first records I ever bought when I got a record player back in high school.

Even though my music tastes and preferences have changed over the years, there has yet to be a time when I don't enjoy Bon Iver's music. Today, I still have a deep appreciation for his music and feel that I have a much greater understanding of his lyrics. Since Bon Iver's music has played such a memorable role in my life, I recently got a tattoo to commemorate it.

I got one of the symbols from the art for Bon Iver's album '22, A Million' tattooed recently.

Ben Howard

I found Ben Howard's music around the same time I found Bon Iver's music. Ben's music was often played in my dance classes and I even danced to a few of his songs at competitions. Thinking back, I can recall listening to his music constantly with my dance friends.

Even after I quit dancing, I never lost my love for Ben Howard's music. Like with Bon Iver, as my music tastes changed over the years, my appreciation for his music never varied. His music is still on my playlists today and I'm hoping I'll one day get the chance to see him live.

While I have enjoyed his more recent releases, his earlier music will always be my favorite. His albums 'Every Kingdom', 'I Forget Where We Were', and 'The Burgh Island EP' are a comfort to me and fill me with nostalgia with every listen.

Taylor Swift

Surprisingly, I wasn't really a fan of Taylor Swift's music until I was an adult. Even though I had a few of her CDs as a kid, I was never a huge fan. I'd chalk it up to the fact that I was an emo teenager who didn't want to give a 'mainstream' artist a chance. Thankfully, I grew out of this mindset.

After my first real heartbreak at the age of twenty, I took a deep dive into her music. Well mostly her saddest songs. According to my stats.fm, I listened to All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault) 67 times in one month back in November 2021.

I eventually started to listen to more than just her sad songs and found that I really enjoyed her music. I've listened to her music so much in the past few years that she is now one of my most streamed artists on Spotify.

Phoebe Bridgers

I really started listening to Phoebe Bridgers about a year or so ago. Before then, I liked a couple of her songs but I had yet to really explore her music. Once I finally did, I was frustrated with myself for not doing it sooner. I have yet to hear a Phoebe Bridgers song that I don't like. I also really enjoy listening to Boygenius' music. Boygenius is comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus.
